Top 10 Highest Grossing Pinoy Movies of 2012

Jan 17

We ain’t got no local movie news until Ph’s film giants release new teasers for their upcoming 2013 movies. So maybe I can update you guys with a box office tally from last year. Dear God! I’ve been wanting to say this out loud and I’m so happy to announce MMFF is finally over! We can now enjoy great movies from Hollywood together with Oscar nominated foreign films.

Anyway, 2012 is yet another milestone in Philippine cinematic history with a local movie finally topping the all-time box office records in the Philippines. Sisterakas has just become the Highest Grossing Filipino and MMFF Movie of All Time! To whether we should rejoice it or not clearly depends on how we feel towards the film. I think it’s unfair to celebrate it because I felt like my wallet’s been robbed. But that’s just me. You’re up for your own. You may say I’m whining about P150 pesos? Yes. I’m whining over that bill because it popped into a whooping P342,000,000 making Sisterakas climb up the box office chart. And to make it worse, it doesn’t even deserve that spot. There’s lousy direction and uninspired filmmaking behind Sisterakas.

It’s almost like 2011′s highest grossing movie ‘Praybeyt Benjamin’ only with Ai Ai delas Alas and Kris Aquino. But anyway, the second spot belongs to another Star Cinema film which I think deserves to be the second highest grossing film of 2012 title. Olivia Lamasan’s The Mistress made it to our Top Commercial Filipino Movies list at no. 5 because despite being formulaic there’s great attention to details and there’s a focus to character development. I also think the general audience actually liked the movie.

3rd place lands to another Vice Ganda movie ‘This Guy’s In Love with U Mare’ which is arguably a comedy film done right. It received mixed criticism from local bloggers which is mostly good but for me this film is okay but thanks to Toni Gonzaga’s performance. Another MMFF entry gets into the Top 5, the highly controversial rip-off of China’s In Love We Trust. One More Try ranks 4th on this list with P170.5-M. Top close the top 5 is the Cathy Garcia Molina film which deserves the attention its gotten. It was a fresh romcom and the best so far since One More Chance. UnOfficially Yours grossed a total of P151.8-M.

If the first 5 were all Star Cinema movies then we only have to more Star Cinema films on the other 5. It starts with Si Agimat Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako which grossed P133.8-M and didn’t deserve it! Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme goes next with P131-M and also didn’t deserve it and Viva Entertainment’s A Secret Affair which deserves to be watched online.

9th and 10th films deserves their spots, with The Healing being a solidly made thriller, bold and bloody at its best and Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles which is a step forward for PH cinema!
